Memory lapse, McNeil?

Saturday, March 06, 2010

Dear Editor,

Representative McNeil has issued a passionate demand that Minister Bartlett and others be severely censured because of a ruling by the contractor general. This relates to arrangements between the Ministry of Tourism and American Airlines.

Despite his much speaking at a news conference, Mr McNeil has no power to inflict the suggested punishment. However, as a seasoned parliamentarian, he can and should do something about the other airline problem about which the CG recommended:

"...that the Parliament of Jamaica should convene a Special Public Hearing at which, at a minimum, the following former or present Public Officers should be called upon to account for the role which they played in the agreement which was reached for Air Jamaica and the Government of Jamaica to divest the Air Jamaica Limited Heathrow Slots to Virgin Atlantic, namely, Dr Omar Davies, the former Minister of Finance and Planning, and Mr OK Melhado, the former Chairman of the Air Jamaica Board of Directors."

If the member of parliament is experiencing a lapse of memory and cannot address both issues he ought hold his peace, withdraw from the skirmish and save his face.

Why is it that the government members, their publicists and apologists, always answer the opposition's criticisms with the same old overworked response "you did it too"? Is it that they really can't find any creditable justification to the issue at hand?
What is the role of the parliamentary opposition? What are their responsibilities to the Jamaican people who elect, and pay, them? Are they to remain silent on issues that may not be in the best interest of the people, simple because they themselves may not without have been without fault in their own time at the helm? Or is it that this administration cannot accept criticism?
Is there a threat to our traditional parliamentary democracy?

LOL!
Gee you could add the debacle of forward sale of the Bauxite to it as well! But if a wrong was committed two wrongs does not a right make.
We just have to keep in mind that every time the ethics challenged Comrade Leadership speaks on corruption/ethics/crime/economy, they auto-mash the big red hypocrite button.
