Last month Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar honoured Toco Secondary school by renaming it after Olympic gold-medal winner Keshorn Walcott.
We are asking her, with the same goodwill, to change the name of the secondary school in Arima, initially known as Arima Government Secondary (or Central by Arimians), to Arima Central Secondary.
All official documents at the ministry of education and the ministry of education's paysheets division have the official name of the school documented as Arima South Secondary School. The school's initials are ASS with an extra "s" - ASS's. That change of the school's name was done about three or four years ago. Which student wants to attend the ASS school that offers secondary education?
Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar, please take away this appalling insult set upon the students. Gift the Arima students with a sense of school-name dignity. Change the school's name in the name of sport. Education stakeholders, imagine Arima South Secondary school flying a banner bearing the school's initials at a sporting event - ASS school. What a mighty embarrassment!
