Appalling violation
Sunday, February 05, 2012
Dear Editor,
I am appalled at the situation at the Portmore police lock-up where persons in custody are being violated.
Recently I had to visit the station to collect some personal belongings of my brother who is incarcerated there and saw one sergeant with one male and two female constables on duty.
What astonished me was when they brought in about nine men from court it was the female constables who strip-searched the men, while the male constable searched their clothing.
I was told by my brother that this is a daily occurrence. What was most embarrassing was when I heard the female constable telling one of the men to go into the bathroom, squat and cough three times while she looked on.
After that, the two women police took four of the men, who were already processed, to the cells.
Apart from being embarrassing, what if those men, along with the others, held on to the women and raped them in the cells? What would be the outcome? Would their families be able to sue the Government?
