Athletes demonstrate strength of Jamaicans
Thursday, August 16, 2012
Dear Editor,
I would like to congratulate and celebrate the outstanding performance of our Olympians at the XXX Olympiad in London. The entire team did us proud.
We particularly salute Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake and Warren Weir for their 1-2-3 win in the 200m and the record-breaking victory of 36.84 seconds in the 4x100m relay finals. Our women athletes, such as Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce winning Jamaica's first gold medal in the 100m final and the other members of the women's relay team performed exceptionally well in our 12-medal haul, allowing us to surpass the 11 medals Jamaica won in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The Jamaican athletes gave of themselves selflessly. Their physical dexterity and fortitude are unparalleled. The Jamaican athletes continue their dominance and their country's legacy of track and field's superiority on the world stage.
Our athletes demonstrated convincingly in London the capacity of the Jamaican people for exceptional greatness when we are provided with opportunities to exercise our talents.
It is clear that Jamaica is an important player in the sporting arena. The Jamaican private sector and the government must commit to assisting in the preparations for the next Olympics and beyond. As a country, we need also to capitalise on the economic possibilities that our sporting success presents.
