Many years ago I phoned the Office of the Prime Minister in Jamaica to find out how my friend could get landline service at the Chantilly Basic School. At that time I was still residing in the US. My attorney's church in the States had a group of people who had been going to the area to donate their time. The then prime minister was P J Patterson. His office gave me the name of two persons; one was the MP for the area. I called Jamaica and spoke with both of them. One was then Minister of Health John Junor, the other was Audley Shaw.
I explained the position to both of them and together they worked on getting the telephone service for the school. Mr Shaw advised me by phone when service was installed.
Shortly after that I returned to Jamaica under tragic circumstances: my brother's murder on his farm. I visited then Minister of Health John Junor and, in fact, have been friends with him to this very day. I find him a warm and brilliant gentleman. I did not meet Mr Shaw, however. It was only when he was minister of finance that I called him and he invited me to visit him at his office.
I did, and it was a most memorable visit. He gave me an autographed book on Kingston and was enthusiastic as he spoke about how he wanted to see Kingston as a premier destination site. It gave me a warm feeling that this was a man who loved his country. He also is a down-to-earth gentleman. This is a man who I believe holds Jamaica close to his heart. I wish him the very best in his endeavours.
