Letters to the Editor

Clovis, change

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Dear Editor,

Among the many reasons for the welcome relief at the end of the “silly season” is that it coincides with a change in the theme and character of the Clovis cartoons. Respect for the newspaper made it very difficult to understand why such a distasteful characterisation of one of our major political institutions and its leadership was allowed in the first place, even while I accept that there are no sacred cows.

To make it worse, the other major political institution and its leadership were spared Clovis’s poisonous pencil, when they could very easily have been a target.

Perhaps one ought not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but it would not be surprising if the change in the nature of the cartoons at this time raises unsavoury questions as to its intent in the first place. Such a suspicion should be resisted as contrary to a hopefully credible new spirit of tolerance, decency and mutual respect, heralding a new approach to how Jamaicans relate to each other across the colour line – whether orange or green.

Those who might have been turned off by this aberration coming from such a talented artist and social commentator, can now continue their association with the Jamaica Observer with less discomfort, hoping never again to have this experience.
