Don't abuse freedom of expression
Tuesday, December 06, 2011
Dear Editor,
The prime minister has been taking a lot of flak from some individuals because of his decision to withdraw his sons from school and homeschool them. A few days ago also, the Observer cartoonist Clovis artistically chastised Mr Peter Bunting that his daughter is being educated in the UK.
It does appear to me that some of us leave substances and pursue shadows. As Jamaicans, we need to eschew parochialism, calumny and mud-slinging in expressing our views. One would have thought that we would focus on issues like governance, corruption, the economy, crime, security, development and moral decadence in the society, etc.
Freedom of expression is, indisputably, one of the tenets of democracy. I thank God for the freedom of expression which exists in Jamaica. But we should not abuse it by speaking and writing out of anger. We should not express ourselves in ways which hurt the feelings of others. We ought to express our views in ways which uplift our beloved island.
I believe it is important that our people know the law and its provisions, and that they be guided by such before they make their utterances publicly. I make bold to say that there is no law in the Constitution of Jamaica which forbids Mr Holness and Mr Bunting to homeschool or "foreign train" their children.
