Our national symbols deserve more respect

Tuesday, February 07, 2012

Dear Editor,

In celebrating our 50th year of Independence, we should highlight regularly the importance of national symbols and aspects of our cultural heritage which make us uniquely Jamaican and justifiably proud. Recognition, respect and reverence must always be shown to these symbols, the most significant of which is our national flag.

A nation's flag is one of its most distinct symbols of identity. There are specific guidelines and protocols surrounding the display and use of the Jamaican flag. Among these, the flag should not be flown tattered or placed on the ground.

I was not amused the first time I saw tourists in Negril, lying on large beach towels in the exact colours and design of the Jamaican flag. Similarly, aren't we trampling on our national symbol when we make items like footballs and slippers with the flag imprinted?

These items in the form or bearing the design of the flag may have been made with a sense of patriotism to boost the image of Jamaica, and in this regard deserve commendation. But isn't it time for us to re-examine whether these practices are in keeping with the specific guidelines and protocols regarding this most important national symbol?
