Parry Town Primary thanks Sandals Foundation, Sandals Grande Riviera
Wednesday, February 01, 2012
Dear Editor,
The Sandals Foundation has adopted our school for the past 15 years. It has helped us in so many ways with several ongoing projects.
Sandals Grande Riviera is solely responsible for our back-to-school clean-up and beautification projects. The managers come and assist the workers to cut the grass, plant trees and paint. In its most recent beautification project, the foundation assembled, painted and erected some picnic benches outside where we can sit comfortably to have a chat with our friends while at play. They also fenced an area of the property.
Technology is an important tool in developing literacy. A few years ago, our school opened its first computer lab with less than a handful of computers which were sponsored by the Harrisons through the Sandals Foundation. A year later, The Great Shape Inc donated five computers. The teachers were able to take up to seven students alternately to the computer lab. Today, we say a big thank you to the foundation. In keeping with the mandate of the Ministry of Education, "Every child must learn", every child at The Parry Town Primary School has access to our new computer lab which can hold 40 students. We are very happy because we now have scheduled computer sessions where we learn all about the computer, and we can do our projects and research without leaving the school compound.
Our school is very blessed because the unpaved area which was once our gravelled playground has been transformed into a multi-purpose court. On this court we now play tennis, netball and basketball.
The team visits our school annually and provides a treat for each child during the Easter and Christmas periods. They do art with us and give us a token. Through the foundation we have met and have been working with the Great Shape Inc for a number of years. These volunteers treat us to computer sessions, reading, art, physical and environmental education. Every year we do a different project. This year we made the seven-strand bracelet which was invented in China. The reading classes are geared towards helping the slower children to read and understand what was read.
A year ago, the foundation launched a Mentorship Programme with the then fifth graders who are currently in Grade 6. The mentors work with their mentees on Thursday afternoons, to help them to be focused for their Grade Six Achievement Test. Some of the mentors assist the mentees with
back-to-school supplies such as pencils, text books, rubbers and school bags.
In December, our grade was treated to a "Pizza Day" because we behaved well for the term.
We want to say a big thank-you to General Manager Mr Brian Roper, Mr Clive Miller, Mr Ian Spencer, Mrs Lindsay Isaacs, the other members of the management team and all the staff of the Sandals Grande Riviera and Sandals Foundation. Thanks for your continued support and dedication to our school. Last but not least, we want to thank Mr Butch Stewart for his outstanding contribution to our country and helping our families.
