Letters to the Editor

Please clarify, ACP Grant

Friday, January 27, 2012

Dear Editor,

It is morally, socially and legally progressive that the Jamaica Constabulary Force will be working with schools in the parish of St Thomas to combat sexual molestation and/or rape of children. However, I am troubled by part of a statement made by Assistant Commissioner of Police Novelette Grant, stating that the initiative is "...to encourage the children to be a bit more responsible".

When does it become the onus of children as it relates to sexual molestation and/or rape? Rather, children should be taught to be aware of what constitutes sexual molestation, rape, sexual assault, etc, and should be encouraged to report criminal acts against them to appropriate authority figures, police, parents, etc.

I would welcome clarification of the statement by ACP Grant. I believe the public needs more explanation of her statement.
