Pollsters
Wednesday, January 18, 2012
Dear Editor,
It seems obvious that some pollsters do not know what they are doing.
This was clearly demonstrated after the results of the election were announced. None of them came close, and even Don Anderson declared that the former deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade, Ken Baugh, was going to lose his seat. It turned out that he won by a substantial majority.
Where did Don get his information? How could he be so wrong, although he was by far the best of a bad lot. In fact, apart from that boo-boo, he actually came very close to predicting the wipeout of the JLP.
Since the death of Carl Stone, a number of people have tried to follow in his footsteps, but what apparently they do not know is that Professor Stone actually lived and dedicated his life to being a great pollster. The money was secondary. The results were more important to him.
May I suggest that in future media outlets send their own journalists into the various constituencies to listen to the people and they will get a very clear picture as to who will win or lose.
