Remember the PNP’s achievements
Saturday, January 28, 2012
Dear Editor,
Now, more than any other time, Jamaicans and Montegonians, for that matter, must recall how the leadership of the past PNP administration impacted significantly on Montego Bay and the entire country. During the 18 1/2 years in which the leadership of Michael Manley, PJ Patterson and Portia Simpson Miller governed Jamaica, the process of the transformation for better development and changes took place in all sectors.
To begin with, Montegonians can all beam with pride as they saw the major expansion work at the Donald Sangster International Airport to include the jet bridges where passengers can now easily walk straight into planes when they are boarding. Many citizens of Montego Bay, in retrospect, will remember how under the leadership of PNP there were 17 new schools built to include high, primary and infant throughout western Jamaica.
Interestingly, under the past PNP regime in the “Second City” we saw the conceptualisation of the present Montego Bay Convention Centre; there was the building of the Multi-Purpose Stadium at Catherine Hall, the establishment of the Montego Bay Type Five Clinic which helped to reduce the pressure of Cornwall Regional Hospital; there was also the rehabilitation of the Civic Centre at Sam Sharpe Square, as well as the construction of the South Gully at the Creek, which helped to prevent flooding in Montego Bay.
Without a doubt, during the same period of the PNP governance, there was improvement of the Montego Bay Transport Centre which was regulated to provide space to accommodate more taxis and passengers.
Indeed, Montegonians should recall other physical infrastructure developments such as the construction of the Western Regional Police headquarters to replace the one at Barnett Street, the construction of the North Coast Development Highway as well as developmental work which was done to the major sewerage scheme in the city to protect the environment. There was also major water expansion upgraded work and upgrading work done in expanding the power plant at Bogue.
At the same time, the people of the “Friendly City” can all beam with pride to have witnessed the National Housing Trust building hundreds of housing units across Montego Bay, including the West Green Housing Scheme, Rosemount, Catherine Hall, Pitfour and Cornwall Courts.
During the past PNP administration we also saw some outstanding tourism development to include the construction of the Montego Bay and Falmouth Cruise Terminals and the expansion of Hotels such as the Sunset Resort, Ritz Carlton among others.
Also, Montegonians must not forget the development of the Howard Cooke Boulevard and the Eldemire Drive which greatly improves traffic flow in the city.
Many well-thinking people of Montego Bay will agree that the PNP had a track record of achievements during their past administration which impacted greatly on Montegonians and Jamaicans on a whole.
