The height of slackness

Monday, January 16, 2012

Dear Editor,

The announcement by Digicel Jamaica that it will cease operation of the Claro network is the height of slackness.

How dare Andrew Holness take it upon himself to change Government policy based on a request from Digicel? I am not surprised to learn that the incoming minister with responsibility for communications is in agreement that Claro be shutdown.

The former prime minister and the current minister should be made to answer for this breach of trust. We were promised that Digicel would run the networks of both entities separately. Now we learn that Digicel all along planned to use Claro's 3.5g network to expand Digicel's 4g service. What about the customers who bought specific 3.5g phones to use on the Claro network?

What about the low-cost data services that Claro provided? There are some serious questions that the OUR needs to ask Digicel as this whole affair seems highly unethical and should be given attention.

In addition to the former prime minister stating why he made such as decision, the current Government needs to tell us why it kept the matter hidden from the public, even before it regained power.

I can only hope that both the FTC and OUR hold Digicel properly accountable.
