Unwise to oppose Sunday horse racing
Wednesday, February 01, 2012
Dear Editor,
Certain elements of the church community have once again come out in opposition to Sunday horse racing, an industry that employs thousands of people. Yet they have no objection to the poorest of the poor losing their $10 every six hours, six times per week or $240 per week, or others who try to win lotteries.
Who benefits? A very small group of shareholders raking in billions of dollars from already poor people.
Sunday racing is the biggest race day all over the world and it is said that without it most jurisdictions would go bankrupt, sending thousands of people into the already long lines of the jobless.
It is a fact that in Jamaica illegal gambling in the form of cockfights are staged all over the country on Sunday. Gaming lounges are also opened on that day and a myriad of other forms of gambling that contribute nothing to the public purse also take place.
I believe that some of this money could be channelled into the off-track parlours which would provide much-needed employment to many people.
