Watchman on the wall of Zion

Monday, June 13, 2011

Dear Editor,

Jamaica is reported to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world. In 2010 Jamaica was rated by Transparency International at 87, down from 99 in the previous year . A total of 187 countries were surveyed.

It was a step in the right direction for Jamaica, and the efforts of individuals who have helped to make this possible should not go unnoticed. Contractor General Greg Christie is one such individual who has been doing an exceptional job of keeping and bringing public officials to book.

Mr Christie, I was saddened by the news that you do not wish to renew your contract when it expires next year. I urge you not to give up. God has called you at a time such as this to be the public watchman on the wall of Zion; to monitor those charged with governance of this beloved country of ours. The road may be rough and long, but remember that God will never take you to it, and not take you through it. Therefore, I appeal to you to take some time and think about it before you make the final decision. Jamaica is in a precarious position and men and women of your calibre, strong backbone, an eye for detail and who hold such high integrity are needed to move this country forward.

Mr Christie, Ellen G White in her book Colporteur Ministry outlined the type of person we have come to know and the type of service that God has called you to do. She says, "Success depends not so much on talent as on energy and willingness. It is not the talent of splendid talents that enables us to render acceptable service; but the conscientious performance of daily duties, the contended spirit, the unaffected, sincere interest in the welfare of others". You have and continue to discharge your duties with such diligence and with the highest of integrity, though painstaking for those under your watch. Rest assured that your reward will be great for your excellent work.
