Letters to the Editor
We do need new self-direction and self-perception
Tuesday, January 31, 2012
Dear Editor,
Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller is correct in reminding us that the time has come to elect a Jamaican to replace the Queen (or King) of England because, as the Revd Ashley Smith alluded
"where we now see ourselves for the most as object of both history and mission, we need to see ourselves as subject".
The prime minister understands that Jamaican people ought to inculcate a new self-direction and self-perception, in order to share in the creation of history. Therefore, we congratulate Queen Elizabeth IIwho championed the change of name, which reads as follows. "And whereas application has been made to us to grant to the said Incorporated Body a supplemental Charter giving it the name of the Incorporated Lay Body of the Church in Jamaica in the Province of the West Indies. The Charter of her Majesty Queen Victoria granted and declared that the said Incorporated Lay Body of the Church of England in Jamaica, shall be known as "the Incorporated Lay Body of the Church in Jamaica in the Province of the West Indies". This was witnessed by Governor General Sir Clifford Campbell in 1964. Later the Cayman Islands were included.
