Why the ‘holier than thou’ attitude?

Monday, October 31, 2011

Dear Editor,

The righteous outburst made by Dr Peter Phillips against the possibility of Mr Danville Walker being a JLP candidate is not only puzzling but also raises questions about intellectual probity among politicians. The Opposition’s campaign manager cannot possibly have forgotten that in the run-up to the last general election his party publicly announced the candidature of Mr Vando Palmer, who was still a senior high-profile manager at the National Works Agency.

The PNP is obviously aware that it is wrong to occupy a senior public post while being active in party politics. Yet when it was in power it allowed the chairman of the Urban Development Corporation to be treasurer of the party. At the same time, the executive chairman of the National Solid Waste Management Authority was in and out as political campaign manager for the then minister of finance.

With all this untidy state of affairs, Dr Phillips raised no question of morality, even when the contractor general was accusing his party official cum public servant of “flagrant irregularity” in connection with an $18-million government contract. On the principle that every member is responsible they should all have resigned. None did.

This PNP pretence of being holier than its rivals is getting to be a tiresome bore. The spokesmen have been extremely busy using the media to publicise every perceived or potential shortcoming of its opponents. Yet it continues unabashed by the lingering odour of its own stable.

@Wayne Campbell I concur. It is not OK that since the other party does it so, it is OK for my party to do the same. Would be nice to point out what the other party did but say "on principle we will not follow in the same path". The JLP need more than the (likes of Mr. Jones who is full of too much green (bile) - giving blind jaundice prejudice support. I think the JLP would be better off without Ken Jones' Support / endorsement. HIS GREEN PREJUDICE KNOWS NO BOUND.

You are right Ken. @Wayne Campbell perhaps you are the one who doesn't get it......It's the fact that (to extend your analogy), It's the PERSON WHO HAS ACTUALLY BEATEN HIS WIFE WHO IS CALLING YOU A WIFE-BEATER. Not an independent observer. That is what is called rank hyprocrasy.

Wayne Campbell, to use your analogy: If you beat your wife, what moral authority would you have to tell someone else that he should not beat his wife? In other words, you cannot be preaching something that you do not, or did not, practice. That would be disingenuous. I think that is more the point Mr. Jones is making, rather than the fact that two WRONGS make a right. Yes, we would love JA to be rid of all of these issues; so, perhaps one party has to take that lead. With that I agree.

"it is wrong to occupy a senior public post while being active in party politics." Ken Jones, please provide the relevant reference to the document that says this is illegal, a conflict of interest or a breach of ethics. This is extremely important; it is not ok to simply that "it is wrong". Where is the documentation to support your stance? And no, "everybody knows" is not an acceptable answer either.

Thanks Ken for continuing to enlighten the public re the absurdly peculiar morality of Peter Philips and his cohorts. The opposition is in some disarray right now so they are trying to gain traction by attacking everything that moves. Of course they will soon get tired and realize that the public want more than games. Peep Peep!
