Dear Editor,

I am a part-time resident of Jamaica currently living in the UK. I made my retirement home in a little community in St Ann called Hadden, situated between Moneague and Ocho Rios. It's about two miles away from the Jamaica Defence Force Camp in Moneague.

For many years there has been a dump in the community which we, the residents, have been complaining about. The situation has become worse over the last 10 years to the point of being chronic.

Growing up I never had asthma. A few years ago I spent over a year in Hadden and have developed asthma. Now I find myself suffering from serious attacks of asthma and arthritis, seemingly brought on by inhalation of the dust and fumes emanating from the dump.

It is seriously affecting the lives of the old and young alike and has the potential to harm babies too.

Despite representation made to the people in charge of waste management, no help has come to us.

We have no other option now but to seek your help before we do the unthinkable block the roads.

Please attend to this matter for us, the residents of Hadden.

Joy Diedrick
