Dear Editor,

When it was reported that the Jamaica Observer was celebrating 25 years of existence my first instinct was to check to verify the age — seemed like the newspaper, which has now become a staple in Jamaica's print media, has been around for much longer.

It was confirmed that the paper was started in January 1993 by Gordon “Butch” Stewart and others as an alternative and competitor to The Gleaner, which had developed a monopoly in the local print media.

I've admired the compact format and size, interesting columns, features, and letters from a wide cross section of opinionated readers who are afforded the opportunity to vent, challenge, and share thoughts on a wide variety of newsworthy topics.

The paper has also embraced social media and the ever-changing digital landscape.

Innovative and creative coverage and programmes add the finishing touch with outstanding social and lifestyle features which help to balance our busy work and professional lives. These are made even more interesting with initiatives such as Jamaica Observer Takes Style Out, Design Week Jamaica, and the Table Talk Food Awards.

To the founder of the Jamaica Observer, Gordon “Butch” Stewart, the managing director, editors and all the staff, I say well done, congrats, and may you have another successful 25 years reporting, informing, entertaining, and educating, while covering and presenting the news.
