Burdensome parking changes in New Kingston

Friday, June 08, 2007

Dear Editor,

This is an open letter to Mayor McKenzie:
I was informed by the police on June 5 that I will no longer be able to park on Pawsey Road or any of the adjoining side roads in New Kingston as of June 6. Although I understand the thinking for this change, such as the obstruction of traffic, the ease with which emergency vehicles need to drive on these roads as well as the inconvenience to people living in the area, I would like to raise my concerns about this sudden decision.

. The KSAC parking lots are full. Although you might be able to find parking in them for an hour or two because someone has not come in for their parking spot (which is paid for monthly), you can no longer find all-day parking spots.

. Was any investigation done to see the number of cars that are parked on these side roads? Don't you think that the KSAC should provide ample parking lots so that all of us hard-working tax-paying individuals don't have to park on the side of the road?

.Why has the KSAC not provided ample parking? Is it because of the lack of physical space in the New Kingston area? Is that why people park on the road - the same reason you do not have enough parking lots?

. Why were the concrete blocks blocking off these side roads removed without informing the public why it was done? We all assumed that it was the drug addicts in the area that moved them, not the KSAC.

. Why has the decision to tow cars been made without proper notification in the newspaper, radio, and the companies in the affected area to inform all of the honest, law-abiding citizens of this change? It is just by chance that I happened to be walking into work and saw the police that I was aware of the change to take place so suddenly! Don't you think that it would have been better to have informed the companies located in this area so that they could work with you to come up with an adequate parking solution for their members of staff?

I do hope that you will think about these issues I have raised and reconsider your decision to "prosecute" us, "inconvenience" us and place us in further debt as from June 6, 2007. We pay enough in taxes to not have this added burden placed upon us.
