Did men take note?

Thursday, May 08, 2008

Dear Editor,

Mark Wignall's article of May 1, "Draw her closer to you" caught my eye, both headline and picture in equal parts. I read it at 6:00 am with my first cup of coffee - that time of the morning when hope and possibilities seem endless.

It stayed with me all day and night, and even now as I write. Mark, I don't know if you've ever written this sort of article before but this felt like someone reached inside me and squeezed my heart, painful but comforting. Painful because I wish to be cherished as you described, comforting because it was a man who wrote these words, and so all is not lost!

There are a few lines which I had to reread a few times:

. As she walks near, reach for the first sparkle in her eyes, savour the magic in the air, and draw her closer to you.

. When she trembles in fear of some failing or imagined fear, walk beside her, take her hand and be her love story.
. Fingers in her hair, a tickle of whispers on her face

The irony is that I've been married a long time to a man who adores me, but who doesn't understand how to cherish me, and so seeks to possess me. I know the sparkle has left my eyes.

I hope your article made many men sit up and take note. I'm sure the women did.
