Dear Editor, Hugs and cheers to Clovis. His editorial cartoon of May 7 is on the money. I love it! I love it! Clovis, you have made my day. I can see myself in the 1970 crowd of your cartoon. The foundation was laid down long ago to solve the food crisis that we are now facing. But no one took heed.
I live in the north-east section of the United States and I can't begin to tell you how disturbed I am when I hear people from my country of origin saying, "I don't eat yam. I eat only pasta and rice." Give me a break! Yam, coco, banana, dasheen and potato were some of our main diet. And for extras we would dash in a few dumplings. Rice was just a side dish except on Sunday when it became special for most, and often with peas. I say this because a strong working man in Jamaica does not consider rice to be a food of stamina. He would rather have a bowl of steaming cornmeal or banana porridge than eat rice.
Now that rice is becoming elusive here in the US and elsewhere, it is definitely a sign telling us to indulge in more self-reliance as mentioned in the 1970 speech of the cartoon.
