RIP, Col Barnes

Thursday, February 26, 2009

Dear Editor, I wish to pay tribute to Colonel Ken Barnes who passed away last Thursday. Col Barnes was a true West Indian.

Trinidadian by birth, he quickly became Jamaican and made an immense contribution to youth and sports development. He was instrumental in getting a number of deprived youngsters like Baller Green, Dumper McDonald and Oscar Black into the army.

I had to relate to him in the late 70s while being SDC supervisor, and found him to be socially aware of challenges that existed and which impacted on the playing of sporting events in communities from opposing political persuasions.

Col Barnes facilitated the playing of matches at one of the fields at Up Park Camp, which was a neutral venue, and had the acceptance of the warring communities. Suffice it to say that it brought about a high level of discipline and a realisation of the participants that we all are one.
Walk good, Colonel Barnes.
