Life's not fair!

Dear Editor,

There was a great column in the Jamaica Observer of Friday, July 20, 2018 written by Franklin Johnston, 'Not fair! Criminals get expungement and big jobs', in which he wrote plainly about the talk making the rounds of people convicted of crimes being absolved. My kind of writing, I think, if I may be so bold.

It was provocative and had interesting questions, having made keen observations — with only just a hint of condemnatory judgement(alism) to coin a phrase.

But, as I am sure everyone knows, life is definitely not fair — and not necessarily just either. And although we often call for justice, what most if not all of us really need are mercy and forgiveness — as our hearts are deceitful and desperately wicked — after genuine repentance, of course. Without mercy and forgiveness, I dare say that none of us would even be alive today.

In any case, Yahweh alone knows what is in a person's heart and mind. He alone knows when and how to deliver righteous judgement — well, certainly not Justice Minister Delroy Chuck, Phillip Paulwell, Peter Phillips, Andrew Holness, writer Franklin Johnston or me.

Peace and love.

Carlton A Gordon
