Dear Editor,

It was with sadness that I learnt last week of the death of former athlete Frederica Wright.

Frederica was one of the best athletes who competed for Dinthill, and would have in her time — from the late 1970s to 1980 — competed against the likes of Merlene Ottey, who went on to represent Jamaica with distinction, and Jacqueline Pusey, the sprint queen from St Mary.

Unfortunately, Frederica, like so many other Jamaican junior athletes, did not go on to competition further than high school.

Despite her relative stardom however, she was always humble.

She was, indeed, one of Jamaica's treasures.

My condolence to her family and friends from her hometown of Church Road, Bog Walk; those who miss her in the USA, where she lived; and her Dinthill family.

Rest in peace, Frederica.
