Reverse $50 PMF, Digicel!
Dear Editor,
The Consumer Advisory Committee on Utilities (CACU) would like to express its disappointment with the recent imposition by Digicel Jamaica of a Prepaid Maintenance Fee (PMF) on customers with a monthly spend of less than $50.
The CACU views this fee as punitive in nature and instituted with what we believe is an unjustifiable rationale given by the company.
While we understand that a business prices their product based on the input costs, this fee affects only a few of their prepaid customers, in spite of the fact that they state they are allowing all prepaid customers to cover the cost of being on the network.
Digicel already has a prepaid life cycle policy which removes inactive customers from their network. We believe that this is a sufficient policy which may be adjusted to suit their needs as they review the profile of their customers and their corresponding pattern of activity.
We believe also that this situation is further exacerbated by the approach utilised by Digicel to inform their customers. This company is renowned for its marketing prowess, yet it chose to inform customers in what could only be viewed as an unacceptable approach which smacks of disrespect for the consuming public.
The CACU calls on Digicel Jamaica to reverse the application of the PMF and strongly recommends that the company refunds all customers who may have been charged this unwarranted fee, since its June 22 imposition.
