Dear Editor,

It's good to be alive! Despite some humungous challenges, personally and nationally, many of us Jamaicans have persevered, if even to justify our various missions in life. Tolerance, self-worth, and unity will certainly serve to uplift us as a people. We need to strive for these in 2018. Basically:

Twenty-seventeen done already

Wat a year!

Anyway, we still deh bout ya

Giving thanks fi life, mi dear.

Nuff people dat wi use to

Suddenly lef dis stage

Tru bullet, knife an motor vehicle

Dat prevail ova ole age!

Yet still, wi try fi look up

An' pull wiself up off di groun.

If wi neva strong an hopeful,

Perhaps wi would'n be aroun.

Well, dis is bran' new year, an watch ya,

Jus as how wi bathe an' change

Wi mus decide fi drop di antics

An stray weh from wi ugly ways!

If wi choose fi trap di past,

If wi befriend revenge,

Or, relinquish hope an reprove dreams

Wi gwine get di stick wid di dutty en!

Jamaica is like big smaddy!

It not noh likkle toddler.

Why fight wiself back into bondage

Instead of helping one another?

Di new year gwine be puzzling, yes

But everybody haffi try

To pull dem weight, an lif' di country, patiently,

Toward di sky!

All di fingah-pointin!

All di spats an restlessness!

All di underhanded business must be put to rest!

Fraidy-Fraidy, hug up weapon.

Enterprising work an' build.

Good-sense focus pon di forward!

No looking back downhill!

Di new year can be happy;

If wi will it into being!

Do! Grasp di light of hope

An mek wi shine fi twenty-eighteen!
