Dear Editor,

Those male students from Green Island High School in Hanover, who were seen in the circulating video assaulting the bus conductor, should be treated as the young criminals that they are.

It was quite disturbing and alarming to see those schoolboys, one armed with a chopper, assaulting the defenseless conductor. I was fearful that the conductor would have been chopped the way in which I saw the boy, who was determined to land blows, wielding it.

What could possess schoolboys who should be learning and positioning themselves to become productive members of the society to be operating like this?

The mother of one of the boys spoke on CVM TV's newscast on Tuesday night, where she had the audacity to defend her son. She stated that her son's criminal action was influenced by the company he keeps. So her son is not, and should not be held responsible for his criminal actions? Should his criminal actions be deferred to the company he keeps? I wonder if he was forced to keep the company he keeps and they held his hands in committing the assault on the conductor?

If her son and his cronies had any morals and respect for life and the law then they would not have been so easily influenced to operate in this way. They have minds of their own; therefore, they will be held accountable for their reckless and negative actions. I will not join the bandwagon and defend these schoolboys in any way. We should call them out and treat them as the criminals that they are. Since I am sure that these young criminals knew exactly what they were doing when they assaulted this conductor, then they should be treated like how we treat other criminals — send them to prison and make them work hard!

It matters not what caused this unfortunate incident to occur. The fact is that these boys took the law into their own hands when they carried out their depraved acts on the defenceless conductor and damaged the bus. Their actions should not be condoned!

The sooner we punish and send a message to young criminals like those seen in this video, the better it will be for us. Let us hope that they can be rehabilitated.
