Dear Editor,

We could talk until our throats become sore about Jamaica's crime problem. We could put measures and strategies in place until there is no place to put any more, to fix this problem. We could come up with the wisest plans to defeat this terrible monster; we still won't get anywhere.

This is because we are not getting to the root of the matter. We are covering it up.

Unless those who are behind the gun trade — who have foreign linkage and are importing or bringing illegal guns and ammunition into the island — will stop doing so; unless the powers that be locate who are the gunrunners are and mash them down to nothing, we will never bring down this high crime rate by even 30 per cent.

Are you telling me that, for more than 20 years, since we have been hearing about the gun trade and illegal guns coming into the country, the powers that be have not been able to identify the culprits behind it? And, we don't even seem to really have any clue who they are. After 20 years, none of them can tell who are the people financing the trade, paying for the ammunition, and moving the guns across the island.

The gun is one of the most dangerous weapons available to criminals. And I believe that 90 per cent of the murders in Jamaica are being done by the gun. So, unless we get the guns, we will still be helpless and hopeless to crime.
