Uma Thurman helps catch accountant-to-the-stars who stole $30m from clients
A £20-million (US$29 million) fraud which allegedly duped dozens of Hollywood stars was uncovered by Uma Thurman.
The Kill Bill actress stormed into the office of accountant Kenneth Starr to confront him over the loss of £700,000 (US$1 million) of her money. Although he paid her back in full, as news spread to his other high-profile clients, Starr's Ponzi-style scheme collapsed and the FBI was informed. When agents raided his Manhattan flat they found him "cowering" behind coats in a wardrobe. The 66-year-old has since appeared in court accused of running the fraud to fund a life of luxury. Thurman, 40, was one of several big Hollywood names -- believed to include actors Al Pacino, Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes -- to have used Starr as an adviser to pay bills, fill in tax returns and look after investments. It is not clear if the fraud charges relate to these stars. Starr is said to have told clients he would invest their money in safe deals, while allegedly funnelling it to himself, his former stripper wife Diane Passage, 34, or associates. The arrangement worked by paying clients back with money taken directly from others, it is claimed. The accountant used the cash to apparently fund a lifestyle of excess including a £5 million (US$7 million) flat in New York's Upper East Side. The flat boasted a 32ft swimming pool in its basement and sprawling garden. The case has rocked Hollywood and dozens of well-known names fear they could have been conned. At a bail hearing the court heard that when federal investigators showed up at Starr's home, his wife pointed upstairs and whispered: "He's upstairs." Agents started looking in wardrobes and spotted his two shoes sticking out from under some coat.

Lady GaGa breaks down on stage
She is known for outrageous costumes and putting on one heck of a show.
And Lady GaGa delivered on all counts Thursday night as she brought her Monster Ball tour back to the United Kingdom.
But what fans might not have expected was to see the softer side of the singer, who performed an emotional set before breaking down and crying as she talked about her sick grandfather who is in the hospital. Dedicating the song Speechless to him, she told the audience: "If we all sing loud enough, maybe he can hear us!" Half way through the song, GaGa had to pause to wipe away her tears. Fans and reviewers were stunned to see her softer side. But it was not long before she was back in the normal swing of things, bathing in an angel fountain spouting blood and getting friendly with her female dancers.

Prosecutor vows to get tough with Lindsay Lohan ahead of court hearing
If Lindsay Lohan was hoping to have an easy time at her upcoming probation-violation hearing, she may be mistaken.
The deputy district attorney that is handling the Mean Girls star's case has promised to intensify her investigation ahead of the court date. The case, set for July 6 in Beverly Hills, will address allegations that the actress skipped the alcohol education classes she was ordered to undergo following her 2007 drunken driving conviction. Danette Meyers, who has a reputation for being meticulous and a tough adversary, is currently trying a death penalty murder case due to end next week. "As soon as I'm finished with this current death penalty trial, I will be focusing all of my efforts on Ms Lohan's upcoming hearing." Meyers has a reputation for being meticulous in her investigations and feared by those she comes up against.
