We're enjoying the jazz vibes inside the exclusive Frenchmen Lounge Friday evening with personal stylist and boutique owner Barbara Portland, who jetted in from Florida for the event.
What are you drinking?
How are you enjoying the Jazz and Blues experience?
I am a Jamaican by birth and it's great to see that my country can produce such a beautiful event. The experience always hits a special place in my heart because not only am I coming here to experience jazz... but I'm coming home.
Which artiste are you looking forward to hearing, and why?
Definitely Mary J Blige; her music always connects to women on another level. Through her lyrics she inspires me to push through in all of my projects and no matter what, I will always succeed.
You're in the business of style. Tell us exactly what your professional life involves.
My work involves a lot of research. Attending Fashion Weeks across the world: London, Dubai, New York and Los Angeles as well as private events. Travelling is the most important aspect of my job. It's the inspiration I need for my clients.
Who is your style icon and why?
Victoria Beckham. Her fashion sense is classic, timeless and chic.
Jeans or a LBD?
A little black dress because it's multifaceted. You can change your whole look and feel, based upon the type of accessories you pair with it and you'll look the part.
Flats or stilettos?
Stilettos; it's a feminine staple that transforms a woman's walk. Every woman needs to have a pair in her closet.
What perfume are you spraying?
Madison Square Park Bond No 9 perfume.
Who does your hair?
A Dominican hairdresser who I've been going to for the past 12 years.
And your nails?
I get my nails done at a European nail spa.
What's your idea of the perfect date?
A walk on the beach, Champagne for two, and a quiet dinner by candlelight.
What are your personal fashion essentials?
A basic white tee, a pair of Rag & Bones jeans, Jimmy Choo wedges and a Chanel purse.
As you are in the business of fashion, which fashion designer would you most want to have a lunch date with? What would you want to discuss?
Roberto Cavalli. I'd like to find out what inspires him with every collection. His prints hit me in a certain way because they have an island flair. As I'm from Jamaica, the combination of his prints give a relaxed and exotic allure that we all get from visiting the Caribbean.
Which fashion trend do you most dislike?
The overloaded trend of spikes and studs.
Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
Designing my own fashion line and being featured at Fashion Weeks across the globe alongside the most innovative and creative fashion designers.
