Cocktails With... Nell Robinson

Sunday, June 13, 2010

The Pulse Complex is abuzz with model hopefuls eager to make the cut for the impending Caribbean Fashion Week (CFW), but despite the flurry of activity supermodel Nell Robinson is in chill mode at the Studio 38 bar, where she's sipping her favourite cocktail.

What are you sipping?

I'm having a mojito.

How is it?

It's actually very good... it's just right; not too sweet and just enough rum (laughs).

What do you love about Studio 38?

It's just a chill vibe and it's close to the New Kingston area, where a lot of my friends work and lucky for me, it's at Pulse. So when I'm here (she's between Europe and The Rock) this is where we have drinks.

What are you most looking forward at CFW 10?

I'm dying to see Lubica's line; her work is really evolving and whenever I wear her abroad I always get compliments. I'm also excited about Gavin Douglas, who now retails at Harrods. He's doing really well and I want to see what CFW 2010 will be like for him.

Who are your favourite designers?

Internationally, I love Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen and Dolce & Gabbana; in terms of Caribbean names I love Meiling, Claudia Pegus and Catch-A-Fire.

Socialite or homebody?

I would say a bit of both, as when I'm in Jamaica it's all about spending lots of time with family and friends.

Flats or stilettos?

It's all about legs, legs, legs... heels give a woman confidence.

What's in your handbag?

Sunglasses by Marc Jacobs, nail polish, Nars lipgloss, blush brush, Givenchy eyeshadow and compact, Panadol and my BlackBerry.

What's your style?

The temperature in London is different, so when I'm there I'd say rock star-chic because I throw a leather jacket over everything. But when I'm home I'm more casual.

When you're not working, where's the best place to find you?

In Jamaica (laughs)!

Who does your hair?

Josie's on Phoenix Avenue.

Who does your nails?

Pamela at Princeville Plaza and Ophelia, who does house calls.

What's the best thing about being a model?

The travelling... I get to fly all over the world and do things I'd never imagine. It's not a nine-to-five, it's flexible.

What projects are you currently working on?

I have been doing some swimwear looks for online clothing store ASOS.com; I have also done Italian GQ which was very sexy and I work a lot with photographer Marc Baptiste, who has a new coffee-table book in which I'm featured, and he will be coming for CFW.

What's the best piece of advice you've been given?

"Believe in yourself regardless of what anyone says or thinks; be confident."

What advice would you give to aspiring models?

Keep a good head on your shoulders; it's good to be signed locally because that way you know someone's on your side: I haven't regretted signing to Pulse. Never do anything you don't feel comfortable doing.

And 10 years from now?

I see myself settled with a family. I've been pursuing my degree in arts and humanities; so by then, I would have long completed it and would have a successful fashion line of sandals or swimwear.
