Golden 'Dos

Get the Look

Saturday, January 21, 2012

Celebrities at the recently staged Golden Globe Awards ceremony not only turned heads in their couture gowns, but also made quite the impression with their fabulous hairstyles. The Under the Dryer team shares our picks for the best hairstyles at the prestigious ceremony and tips on how you can 'get the look' your favourite celeb rocked for the big show.

Waves, Curls and Volume

This chic yet elegant look was very popular at this year's staging of the Golden Globe Awards. Modern Family's Ariel Winter opted for a more vintage look — wavy curls which she swept to one side — while Salma Hayek opted for loose barrel curls for her two-toned highlighted hair. Getting these looks require that your hair not only be healthy, but also supplied with texture and sheen to get a more polished finish. You may also go vintage by experimenting with height, by requesting additional volume for that 70s-like 'big hair' finish like Zooey Deschanel who debuted a much shorter 'do for the big night.

Steps:

Hayek's hairstylist Robert Vetica gave In Touch magazine the following steps:

Add a bit of length to complement the Hollywood noir vibe. Blow-dry the hair with a round brush then curl two-inch sections with a small curling iron, making sure to twist away from the face. Keep the curls tight on the curling iron because when released, the length will help it drop into a loose wave. To finish, brush through the spirals, tease the roots, and mist with hairspray.

Updos

The side swept low bun was perhaps the most popular form of updo at this year's show. This elegant yet timeless look was given a modern spin by A-lists stylist who added loose and wavy curls to their client's locks. According to Becomegorgeous.com the side swept and half-up/half-down hairstyles are perfect for women with long hair "as these hairstyles accentuate the length without causing it to lose its elegance." Charlize Theron, star of Snow White and the Huntsman accessorised her messy updo with a vintage Cartier diamond headband. Covert Affairs star Piper Perabo, also opted for the messy updo but also dared to be different by straying away from the side swept updo by creating intricate curls to the back of her hair using bobby pins.

Steps:

Pin and twist the hair into an undone bun. Use the hairspray of your choice to eliminate frizz and give sheen to the hair. According to In Touch magazine, Charlize Theron's hairstylist, Enzo Angileri, used Moroccanoil Frizz Control as his finishing product to eliminate the frizz.

A Fabulous Short Hairdo

The best short 'do of the evening went to none other than Golden Globe winner Michelle Williams- who snagged the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture award for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn. Her ultra-short glossy pixie cut was made glamorous by adding an embellished headband. This look requires not real steps but encourages you to go bold by creating a super low haircut which can still be elegant and chic. During the ceremony, CNN's Piers Morgan tweeted that Williams' look has been at this length because "Heath Ledger (late actor and father of her child Matilda) liked it that way."
