The reviews were right!
Powerful! Fantastic performance!
Written and performed by Jamaican-born Debra Ehrhardt, Jamaica, Farewell has been heralded as one of the best one-woman shows to hit the stage -- so much so, that many eagerly anticipate its adaptation to film by Hollywood's Rita Wilson.
It was a full house at Pablo Hoilett's Theatre Place on Wednesday night. The opening of the play brought out throngs of people, many from the theatre fraternity, but also family of Ehrhardt's, specially invited guests and those in the know who had heard the rumblings about Ehrhardt's stellar set.
It must be difficult for one person to perform an entire show solo -- switching from one character to the next, ensuring that the audience follows the story and that they are kept entertained.
Patrons watched in both amusement and in awe of dynamo Ehrhardt as she commanded the attention of the audience, delivering line-by-line non-stop, for 85 minutes.
A definite must-see, Jamaica, Farewell hits close to home, recounting many truths that resonate among Jamaicans. In her performance, Ehrhardt stays true to her roots though she had bid 'Jamaica, farewell'.
