With Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez both announcing their departures from American Idol last week, the Fox network had some new recruiting to do. And they have now filled one of the gaps by recruiting one of the music industry's biggest divas, Mariah Carey.
It was confirmed today that the 42-year-old singer would be joining the judging panel for Season 12, which up until now only consisted of longtime judge Randy Jackson. For several weeks it had been rumoured that Carey would be in the running for the top job.
According to Entertainment Weekly, her salary is said to be between $12 and $17 million. Lopez was paid $12 million during her first season of the show and $15 million this year.
Fox entertainment president, Kevin Reilly, said in a statement Monday last that the network was thrilled to have the songstress on the team. “It's the biggest recording artiste any of these [singing competition] shows have ever had,” he said, during a press conference in Beverly Hills.
“It's an artiste many of these contestants have tried to emulate. Not being the only game in town, we need to keep things fresh.” Reilly
then put Carey on speakerphone and she said: “I am so excited to be joining 'Idol'. First of all, I wanted to be there today and I wish I could've been there to tell you, but I think you know this all kind of just happened real quickly, so I can't wait to get started in a couple months.”
She also expressed her excitement to her fans via Twitter. “It's gonna be so much fun working on @AmericanIdol,” she wrote. “As a singer/songwriter, I'm excited to help find and nurture new talent. LYM! -MC”.

Lady Gaga takes boyfriend to dinner at father's restaurant
Father knows best, so if Lady Gaga is happy to take boyfriend Taylor Kinney to her beloved father's restaurant, then everything must be right between the couple .
The Poker Face singer had been with Kinney during her tour in Australia and the couple arrived back in New York last weekend. They went for the all-important Sunday dinner at Joe Germanotta's restaurant Joanne's, where Joe is usually in attendance. The hard-working singer looked exhausted as she exited the Italian restaurant, which is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, but wore a pair of dark shades to try to hide it.
She wore her long platinum blonde pulled into an eccentric mini beehive and wore a blue sheer dress with Sgt. Pepper Lonely Heart's Club Band-type piping. The 26-year-old Telephone singer paired the shift with nifty fishnet stockings. Usually seen traipsing along in six-inch heels, Gaga again did not disappoint. She wore black ankle boots with red soles. Kinney, though, seemed wide awake as his eyes sparkled in his tanned face as they exited the restaurant. Lady Gaga is clearly once again smitten with her boyfriend. They broke up in May after 10 months together as Lady Gaga's crazy touring schedule allegedly took its toll on their relationship.
