Necessary Luxuary — Michael Sharpe

Sunday, September 05, 2010

Journalist

The world is often described as a global village in light of the impact and reach of the information age. With the many strides that have been made since that description, I believe it would be more fitting to see the world now as a global corner.

In order for me to keep my head above the "digital waters" there are critical "luxury" tools to assist. In my tool kit you will find my laptop, thumb drive, fountain pen, video camera and my Digicel Bold smartphone. My laptop is both a source of information by way of connection to the Internet, which feeds me with news from all over the world and, of course, a source for further research. It is also critical for editing video which is gathered by my video camera.

Following the sound advice that "Jesus saves and so should you", my thumb drive is ever present to back up my work, for as we all know, it's not if but when we will need it. It serves the purpose of having my entire office on a small device which I can take anywhere with me. It's a comforting feeling.

All of these tools are dependent on my smartphone on which all my contacts are made. BBM is awesome as it connects me to the world and the world to my corner in a snap. This Internet feature makes the difference in being ordinary or having the competitive advantage.

My fountain pen, which many consider a relic from the past, has a place in my tool kit. Although fast becoming a paperless world, some writing has to go on. What better way than to do it with comfort and style? My pen is a throwback from my days at Calabar High School, but one that I treat like fine wine.

My tool kit equips me to compete in the international marketplace, indeed on the international corner. Hello!
