Styling from the HEART

Under the Dryer

Saturday, January 14, 2012

The HEART College of Beauty Services has had an official salon for their organisation since 1983. In 2008, however, a decision was made to re-brand the salon by not only giving it a new home on Hope Road, but also giving it an official name — Salon 10. "We had an internal competition to come up with the salon's name. It was decided that we would call it Salon 10 because not only are we located at 10 Hope Road, but since the given scale for excellence is usually from 1-10, we aim to always give our clients a 10 in terms of our service," explained Jodine Williams, acting director for the HEART College of Beauty Services. She went on to explain, "Clients do not have to worry about getting service from an untrained person as all salon operators are trained graduates of HEART, many of whom are still engaged in further studies." The Under the Dryer team popped in for a visit along with bartenders from J Wray & Nephew — who served delicious mixes of Raspberry Rose and Mango Caliente cocktails — to see what Salon 10 had to offer. Here is what happened...

Décor: The impressive décor of the salon is perhaps the first thing that one notices. Each service offered is done in a different room which has modern yet elegant furnishing.

Efficiency: Staff members moved quickly and were very knowledgeable in haircare techniques and the products needed to achieve a particular hairstyle.

Clients for the day: Nerva Davis, Paulette Henry, Carline Senior, Christine Baker, Qubeath Quest, Lionel Wilson, Rosemarie Thomas and Merdina Callum.

Volume and Style

Nerva Davis, recruitment officer

Nerva has been a client of the HEART Salon for many years, even before their renaming to Salon 10 in 2008. She gave rave reviews about the delightful atmosphere at the salon. "I believe in the products and services of HEART — now Salon 10 — and its graduates. I am pleased to say that the staff is not only kind but very professional," she stated. During her visit, Nerva decided to rejuvenate her straight hair and give it additional volume.

o Shampoo the hair using Gentle Scalp Cleansing Shampoo from CDWOW!

o Lather the hair a second time with Creme of Nature Detangling Ultra Moisturizing Conditioning Shampoo.

o Rinse the hair.

o Use a handheld blow-dryer to dry the hair.

o Apply hair extensions to the hair using the bonding method.

o Apply King Professional Bees Wax to the hair and style immediately using a ceramic flat iron.

o Trim the ends of the hair with a razor to the desired length.

o Curl using a flat iron.

o Finish the look by lightly applying Design Essentials Botanical Oils Hair & Body Moisturizer with Ginseng.

Nerva's take:

I love it!

Natural Beauty

Christine Baker, store owner

Christine couldn't resist boasting about her favourite stylist at Salon 10 — Charmaine Ingram. It is her belief that Charmaine has helped get her hair and scalp healthy again during her year as a client of the salon. "Charmaine has helped me get rid of my dandruff problem and has caused my hair to be in tip-top shape. I enjoy spending hours here because the salon is also very relaxing" she explained.

Procedure:

o Cleanse the hair using a Design Essentials Moisture Retention Shampoo. Lather the hair a second time with Design Essentials Theraputics Anti-Itch Shampoo.

o Condition the hair with Design Essentials Stimulations Super Moisturizing Conditioner.

o Do not rinse the product out. Place a cap on the hair and sit under the dryer with the product in the hair for 15 minutes.

o Rinse the product from the hair then use a handheld blow-dryer to dry the hair.

o Apply Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Moisturizing Hair Lotion to the hair and Optimum Care Dandruff Solutions to the scalp.

o Flat-twist the hair to the desired style.

o Curl the ends of the hair with a curling iron.

o Finish the look by misting the hair with Design Essentials Botanical Oils Hair & Body Moisturizer with Ginseng.

Christine's take:

My make-up is excellent and I love it! My hair is beautiful as usual.

Revamped Pixie

Qubeath Quest, recruitment coordinator

This is Qubeath's first visit to the salon but within minutes of being styled, she showed how impressed she was by the salon. "The staff is so thorough and professional here!" she exclaimed. Though she adores her short pixie cut, Qubeath decided to colour to her hair and add extensions to the front of her hair.

Procedure:

o Cleanse the hair with Creme of Nature Detangling Ultra Moisturizing Conditioning Shampoo.

o Colour the hair with a mixture of harvest gold, crimson and burnish gold semi-permanent hair colour.

o Place a steam cap on the hair and sit under the dryer for at least 20 minutes.

o Rinse the product from the hair.

o Shampoo the hair using Creme of Nature Detangling Ultra Moisturizing Conditioning Shampoo.

o Condition the hair using Design Essentials 6 N 1 Reconstructive Conditioner.

o Flat-wrap the hair and sit under the dryer until the hair is dry.

o Loosen the wrap and apply extensions to the front of the hair for added volume.

o Razor-cut the hair to get more layers.

o Loosely curl the back of the hair.

o Flat-iron the top then use a big barrel curling iron to create waves in the hair.

o Lightly apply Design Essentials Botanical Oils Hair & Body Moisturizer with Ginseng to the hair.

Qubeath's take:

It's looking good. I am happy with it. I didn't like the colour at first but I must admit it really works for me.

Relaxing Mani and Pedi

Rosemarie Thomas, human resources manager

Melisa Smith performed the manicure and pedicure on her client Rosemarie. Rosemarie was eager to advise future clients that the procedures done at the salon are always very relaxing and are the perfect stress-buster. She perhaps speaks from experience as she has been a client at the salon for over 15 years.

Rosemarie's take:

I love the excellent service I receive when I come in for a visit. They always spoil me even though they know I can be a very fussy client. The manicure and pedicure were very relaxing.

Soothing Aromatherapy

Merdina Callum, public relations officer

Robert Clarke, Salon 10's spa therapy instructor and masseur performed a deep tissue aromatherapy massage session on Merdina, who was eager to give it a try. However, a consultation had to be done first. Once it was seen that there was no factor that might prevent Merdina from doing the treatment Clarke began the process.

Procedure:

o Do a flair reaction test by applying oil to the skin to ensure that there is no allergic reaction.

o Apply a blend of essential oils (specially prepared for each client) to the skin.

o Begin with effleurage to spread the oil on the skin.

o Begin the massage by focusing on trigger points — using kneading, and petrissage techniques — on the back.

o Continue the massage techniques to the back of the legs, thighs and then the front of the body.

o Perform reflexology on the feet.

Merdina's take:

My massage was heavenly. I had a pain in my shoulder and that is now gone. I didn't even have to tell him about the problem during the treatment. He discovered there was a tightness there so he alleviated that for me.

New Year, New Look

Lionel Wilson

Lionel informed barber O'Neil Jackson that he needed a new look for 2012. Though this was only his third visit he was very confident that the Salon 10 team could provide him with the service and style he needed. So O'Neil decided to give him an all-in-one treatment which included a trim and shave with a basic facial.

Procedure:

o Trim the hair using Oster Fast-Feed clipper to get it to a suitable level.

o Outline the hairline using an Andis T-Outliner.

o Use a razor to define the hairline.

o Shave beard using Andis T-Outliner.

o Use Remington Rotary Shaver Plus Men's Grooming Hair Trimmer for a closer shave.

o Apply St Ives facial cleanser and Gillette Foamy sensitive skin to the face.

o Massage the product into the skin.

o Apply steam to the face to open the pores.

o Use a warm rag to remove the product from the face.

o Apply La India mentholated lotion to complete the procedure.

Lionel's take:

I loved it very much. I always feel very good about myself when I leave here.

True Radiance

Paulette Henry, coordination distribution officer

Paulette has been a client for about seven years. She ensures that they routinely take care of all her haircare needs which range from treatments, styling, cutting and colouring. "I like the service and the warmth of the staff here," she explained. Though her primary intention is to get her hair done, she admits that she occasionally indulges in a massage if time permits.

Procedure:

o Shampoo hair with Creme of Nature Detangling Ultra Moisturizing Conditioning Shampoo.

o Condition hair with Design Essentials 6 N 1 Reconstructive Conditioner.

o Apply Fancifull Mousse — True Steel colour to the hair.

o Set hair on large rollers.

o Sit under the dryer until the hair is dry.

o Use a handheld blow-dryer to dry the hair.

o Style the hair with a large tooth rake comb.

o Mist the hair lightly with Design Essentials Botanical Oils Hair & Body Moisturizer with Ginseng.

Paulette's take:

My hair looks fantastic — like the product of Salon 10!

Fabulous Curls

Carline Senior, IT practitioner

This is Carline's first visit to Salon 10. "I really think the staff seems to love what they do and it is evident in their service delivery," she explained. Carline decided to get a spiral design because her hair was already washed but flat and without much flair. Therefore, this curly look was perfect to jazz up her plain hairstyle.

Procedure:

o Apply King Professional Bees Wax to the hair for sheen and protection from heat.

o Use a curling iron to the back of the hair to give a spiral effect.

o Leave the front straight and style with a ceramic flat iron for side-swept bangs.

o Finish the look by misting the hair with Motions Light Hold Working Spritz.

Carlene's take: I love my hair!

The L'Oreal Group is currently in partnership with Salon 10 until the end of February. All clients who purchase L'Oreal products from the salon on Mondays and Wednesdays from now until the end of February will receive a free makeover. Also, all make-up used on this shoot were provided by the L'Oreal line.
