The UWI Students' Union lit up the sky on Saturday night as Guinness Spectrum 2004 was set ablaze with musical excitement.
The show, co-sponsored by Fifth Element Promotions, though off to a late start, saw an interesting line-up of both amateur and professional dancehall acts.
'The Doctor' Beenie Man, in trademark white overalls, white gloves and stethoscope, unleashed his lyrical potions to the large gathering that turned up for Spectrum.
Showing little or no signs of illness, Beenie Man gave an expected entertaining performance in his first stage show since his recent near-fatal motor vehicle accident. "A my come-back this" he said as he comically took the microphone from a performing Baby Cham and even went on to unveil his new dance 'The Kangaroo', exhibiting familiar dance skills and physical fitness.
After being called on by deejay Baby Cham, the crowd went crazy as 'The Doctor' unleashed favourites like Bun Chi Chi Man and Bad Man No Ramp With before teaming up with Cham to form a dynamic duo that locked the event until it ended about 4:30 on Sunday morning. The duo took turns trading their hits before the curtains came down on another pulsating Spectrum event.
During his energetic performance it was evident that Beenie Man was very thankful to be alive as he repeatedly gave thanks and even rendered a gospel song.
Before the Doctor and Cham got their share of the limelight, young deejay Assassin decked in a red and white Enyce suit and baseball cap kept patrons jumping and waving with anything they could find.
Assassin let loose with Bad Mind, Yard Man and Straight before driving the ladies crazy with Girls Gone Wild and Girls Alone We Care For while his mentor Spragga Benz who came on to screams did one song and stepped aside leaving things to his protégé.
The high point for the night however was the pulsating and igniting performances of culture acts Richie Spice and Chuck Fenda.
Fireworks illuminated the heavens above the Students' Union grounds as Richie Spice released an onslaught of hit singles that had the entire Spectrum 2k4 singing along. He received a well-deserved encore at which time Spice did his present hit single Earth A Run Red before making way for Chuck Fender.
Spectrum 2K4 without doubt maintained its reputation as one of the high profile sessions on the calendar, and we await the 2K5 version with great anxiety.
