'Thought-provoking' Guild of Artists' weekend
By Ann-Margaret Lim Observer reporter
Sunday, July 11, 2004

Fox-Mould's Fiona

Experimental, a dramatic green and red watercolour combination at once boasting the image of perhaps a saxophone, a brain, a foetus or anything else the mind momentarily contrives, was one of the eye-catching displays at the last Jamaica Guild of Artists' weekend exhibition at the New Kingston Shopping Centre.

According to Sonia Richards, its creator, or should we say facilitator, if we accept the theory that art floats in the air and is captured by those who can see it, "the piece was unplanned, represents a process and is very thought-provoking." She continues, "it could be a birth of ideas or brain activity, and some people say they see it is a volcano."

Ms World's world - Mitchener

Another stimulating, riveting piece on display was Everton Mitchener's Miss World's World. Even a first glance at the disturbing image of a two-faced woman - one side boasting Negroid features and the other Caucasion ones, ellicits response, either one of shock, disgust or understanding.

"Everyone thinks that Miss World is all glamorous, but there's a sad side to her. Low self-esteem, evidenced by bleaching gives her the split personality you see," explains the Harbour View resident.
Sunset and Bath are other Mitchener pieces that showcase his more idyllic side.
Betty Glanville's watercolour Underwater Coral Garden is a colourful capture of the mystic and vibrant underwater world.

And guild president Sharon Fox-Mould's postcards, boasting bewitching replications of herself as Fiona, Zetalla and others are amongst some of the art and craft items including ceramics, jewellery and textiles on display every last weekend of the month at the New Kingston Shopping Centre.
