Renowned Jamaican instrumentalists Monty Alexander and Ernest Ranglin are featured on the cover of the latest issue of Jazz Times, the premier publication covering the jazz idiom in the US. The duo are among several noted Jamaicans and music personalities included in a feature by Jazz Times editor Christopher Porter.
America has influence on the development of Jamaican music, notably ska, but also reggae. The article examines the links between the jump-jazz made famous by the likes of Louis Jordan and Bill Doggett, the Latin swing of Cuba and other neighbouring Caribbean islands, as well as the island's long-standing big band tradition. The story also features Jamaica Big Band and Ocho Rios Jazz Festival founder Sonny Bradshaw, bandleader Carlos Malcolm, the late Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd performer and music educator Marjorie Whylie, Anglo-Jamaican bassist and bandleader Gary Grosby (Jazz Jamaica All Stars) and musicologists Herbie Miller and Dermot Hussey. Hussey is currently a programmer for XM Satellite Radio, based in New York City.

Monty Alexander and Ernie Ranglin have a longstanding personal and professional bond, and have made numerous collaborative recordings. Their most recent joint venture, Rock Steady, on the Telarc label, celebrates the popular songs of Jamaica from the late 1960s and early 1970s, but also includes a nod to reggae icon Bob Marley, with a take on his anthem Redemption Song. Published since 1970 (when it was known as Radio Free Jazz; the name was changed in 1980), Jazz Times is the leading periodical covering jazz recording and performance.
