September 11 may be a momentous date for the wrong reasons, but contrarians Lloyd Bennett and his wife are confident it will turn out auspicious for them as they host their first entertainment showcase at their newly-opened Spanish Village Complex in Twickenham Park.
The vintage-themed show will feature the likes of Leroy Sibblies, Ernie Smith, Ken Boothe, Otis Gayle, Bunny Brown, George Nooks and Ernie Smith with the Fabulous 5 band providing support on the stand.
The combination launch/official opening ceremony unfolded at the upper level of the complex recently with a number of participants addressing the well-wishers. Vintage crooner/songwriter Ernie Smith, his trademark baritone demonstrably intact, didn't sing on that occasion, but thanked the principals for contributing to the growth of entertainment industry.
"Any venture that adds to the availability of quality entertainment for Jamaicans is good for the country and for Spanish Town in particular." The entertainer, known for classics such as Life Is Just For Livin' and Duppy Or Gunman added that music was a proven peacemaker and needed to be more fully developed and supported.
Unflappable Spanish Town mayor, Dr Raymoth Notice, lauded the Bennetts for their persistence and expansionist mindset and called for more focus on the good things happening in the ancient capital rather than on the current turmoil. He added that the impresarios should embark on a star search talent showcase and offered a commitment to personally sponsor such a venture.
The Spanish Village complex is the outgrowth of what originated as an ice cream and snack counter and has steadily grown to encompass a plaza as well as a restaurant and conference rooms with the capacity for weddings, seminars and other events.
The Spanish Harlem show is being sponsored by the RJR Communications Group, Jamaica Cable Vision and Jamaica Amalgamated Cable Service (JACS), and Bourne's Texaco.
