Bob Marley's No Woman No Cry has been added to the Recording Academy's Grammy Hall of Fame. Joining the reggae classic in this year's Hall of Fame class are the Let It Bleed album by the Rolling Stones and the late Ray Charles' rendition of America The Beautiful among other songs. The Hall, which was founded in 1973, now hosts 659 titles. But the nod to No Woman No Cry carries a tinge of irony as Marley himself was never honoured with a Grammy during his lifetime.
In making the announcement, Recording Academy President Neil Portnow said: "This year's inductees represent an array of genres including traditional pop, rock, reggae, and jazz. They exemplify some of the best qualities that make the recording arts such a vital part of our culture: the ability to transcend time, and the power to inspire emotion, whether it be joyous, patriotic, or simply romantic." Portnow added that the selections, drawn from all categories of music, acknowledge the diversity of musical expression for which the recording Academy has become renowned.
Grammy Hall of Fame selections honour recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance, which must be at least 25 years old, and are selected by a special Academy member committee.
