Without a doubt, Yami Bolo is one of the most unique voices in reggae. In the months following the relative success the singer enjoyed through his Grammy-winning combination with Damian "Junior Gong" Marley, Yami Bolo seemed to have taken a musical sabbatical.
But since last month's official release of the ballad, I Am A Light, Yami Bolo is forging his way into the limelight once again. Appearing on the Kings of Kings label and featuring Iley Dread, I Am A Light has been getting reasonable airplay on reggae radio locally as well as in the United States and Europe.
The song is set over a soothing rhythm called Zion Bread, which is the brainchild of musician/producer Courtney Panton, at his Kingston Studios in New York where the single was recorded.
The lyrics berate persons whose lives are consumed with uttering negative statements about others when most of the time the statements are lies.
The producers of the single have signalled their belief that I Am A Light will make a good impression on the music-loving public which will translate into brisk sales of compact discs and vinyl records.
A music video is currently under production and according to Kings of Kings executive Castro Pink, the latest technology is being used in the production of the music video.
"The video will be shot using a three millimetre format and SIM quality, which is the internationally acceptable format," Pink said.
Yami Bolo was born on October 1, 1970, and raised in Kingston 13. His parents named him Rolando Ephraim McLean. The 1980s were the formative years of dancehall music and during that decade Bolo rose from a community singer to become a leading member of Sugar Minott's Youth Promotion Crew.
