Self-reflection through art
The Mutual Gallery and Art Centre

Sunday, August 14, 2005

Ebony Patterson and Tiffany Recas were the major winners in the SuperPlus Under-40 Artist of the Year Competition for 2005 The Public Prize went to Tiffany, while the Jury Prize was awarded to Ebony.

Ebony Patterson is a 2004 graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts where she received a Diploma in Painting (1st Class Honours). She is pursuing a Masters Degree in Fine Arts, specialising in printmaking, at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, USA.

For Patterson, language is an integral construct of identity. In her works she seeks to explore the relationship between common Jamaican curse words and the female gender.

She looks more specifically at how the references to the "female experience" have become connected to the cultural jargon. The paintings are explicit studies of her body and her search for identity within the cultural context of Jamaica.

Much like a photograph that captures a moment in one's life, Tiffany Recas attempts to recollect her experience and emotions in her work. The images are released from within her and are contained in "boxes". Her focus is on the self and personal identity. Her work also encourages viewers to do their own self-reflection.

Recas graduated with distinction with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, in 2002. Since 2001 she has participated in group exhibitions in Toronto, Montreal, and Jamaica.

Her work has been included in the National Biennial in 2004 at the National Gallery of Jamaica. Her awards include the Outstanding Ceramic Student Award of the Year from Concordia University.
