| SHAKA POW ...Right now my music is at a high point |
He can be found in the emergency room and operating theatre of the May Pen Hospital in Clarendon as much as in the recording studios.
A past student of Kingston College, he is known in the medical field as Dr Garth Mc Donald, while in the world of dancehall/reggae he is Shaka Pow, the deejay who currently has a number of releases enjoying good airplay on radio. With five songs getting power-play, Shaka Pow has attracted the attention of a number of top producers, among them Steely and Clevie and Q-45, producer of the song Look Sexy for which the entertainer who manages to balance medicine and music has a video. Featuring in the video is the female performer, Fetish.
The most popular of Shaka Pow's current releases is titled, Long Before Phone, a counteraction to Vybz Kartel's Hello Moto. As the lyrical sparring continues, Shaka Pow rallied with Super War on the Jump Off rhythm.
In an effort to maintain the hype, Shaka Pow has filmed two more videos, one around the song, Long Before Phone, while the other is to complement another of his more current releases, Heart Of The Poor. His other works of merit see him teaming up with Heather Cummings on a tune called Independent Girl and Barrington Levy for a fresh take on Bob Andy's Too Experienced.
"Right now my music is at a high point," said Shaka Pow who shared the popular Rose Apple rhythm with a host of top acts like TOK, Anthony B, Sizzla, Mr Perfect, Turbulence, Thriller U, to name a few. "I feel comfortable for where I have reached in music, as an artiste and as a writer," he told Splash.
At the rate he is progressing musically, one could be forgiven for assuming that Shaka Pow has plans to give up his medical practice to advance his musical career. But on the contrary, the doctor who in 1997 completed his medical studies and graduated from the University of the West Indies (UWI), is planning to go even further into medicine which he regards as his middle name.
"I have no intention of giving up medicine, that's my middle name," he said.
"I love medicine," emphasised the physician/artiste whose debut album two years ago was titled I Am Tha Doc, "I love taking care of people... as a matter of fact I want to go further in medicine. I want to get into obstetrics and gynaecology."
