Petition circling to have Reggae Grammy Award presented during the live show
Observer Reporter
Monday, November 07, 2005

A petition has been circling via email and word of mouth in the reggae music industry, both here and abroad, calling for the Reggae Grammy to be presented to the world during the live show instead of just for those in the audience on Grammy night. The Reggae Grammy is presented during the show but not aired on television.

Reggae, and its counterpart dancehall, which is also grouped in the same category by the Academy, has grown to even higher levels of international success in recent years with the careers of artistes and Grammy winners Shaggy, Sean Paul and Fredrick 'Toots' Hibbert. Those behind the petition suggest that the level of international recognition now received by the artistes nominated warrant their receipt of the coveted award in front of the television audience.
Below is a copy of the petition:

To: The Recording Academy

For about two decades, Reggae Music has been acknowledged at the annual Grammy Awards ceremony.
We appreciate the recognition; however, we believe the time has come for the reggae winner(s) to be included in the televised portion of the programme.

Reggae/dancehall music is international. Ours is one of the most popular genres, and is enjoyed by young and 'not so young' worldwide daily.
Countless legends in the reggae music fraternity, proudly carried the torch for us, and every year another Reggae artist/group, is honoured with a Grammy award. All we ask is for this to be done for the entire world to see, and not just those fortunate enough to be seated in the auditorium on Grammy night.

I am appealing to the members of the Grammy Committee, to include the Reggae category in the televised portion of show.
In the words of the 'Artiste Of The [20th] Century' Bob Marley, "We have to 'get up, stand up."
