One of Jamaica's and reggae's most acclaimed and well known shows, Reggae Sunplash is set to return in 2006.
Reports are that Kenny Benjamin, chairman of the Guardsman Group of Companies along with Charles Campbell, former Sunspalsh show producer and director of operations for Synergy Productions Limited are the principals behind the effort to revive Sunsplash, which not only captivated local audiences but also gained worldwide acclaim following tours of Africa, North America, South America, Europe and Asia. The Sunsplash overseas tours were especially popular in Japan.
Neither Benjamin nor Campbell could be reached for comment but Observer sources say the revival show is planned for the Independence weekend at a venue close to Ocho Rios. It was also understood that telecommunications giant Cable & Wireless, through their president and chief executive officer Rodney Davis, has already agreed to be the main sponsors of Reggae Sunplash 2006. This however could not be confirmed as Davis was not available for comment.
The first Reggae Sunplash was held in 1978 at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay with the late Jacob Miller and the Inner Circle band as the main artistes. That first show was promoted by Synergy Productions Ltd. The final show was held in Ocho Rios in 1997 and was promoted by Radobar Ltd.
