Gregory Isaacs' The Originals is quite pleasing
with Kevin Jackson Observer writer
Friday, June 16, 2006

Honestly, I have lost count of the numerous albums that have been released featuring the work of veteran singer Gregory Isaacs. The latest release of The Originals on Tads Records isn't just any ordinary album. It marks a renewal of a long-standing relationship between Isaacs and the Tad imprint.

Isaacs had recorded several songs for the label between the mid-1980s into the 1990s.
The Originals is the third disc compilation by Isaacs for the Tads label. It contains unreleased original recordings which were recorded more than 10 years ago.

Dubbed as the ultimate reggae experience, the Tads label went back into its vaults to unearth 19 treasures and have unleashed them unto unsuspecting music enthusiasts. One of the finest and most listener-friendly collections of Isaacs' career, The Originals buoys with sharp rhythms and infectious lyricism.

The fact that Isaacs' long stretch of hits has made him a household name in Jamaica and internationally, is remarkable in and of itself. But what makes The Originals so exceptional, is the simple brilliance of the songs and the pleasing arc of the arrangements. An additional bonus is the second disc which contains a dub vocal mix of all 19 songs.

The songs tell Isaacs' story like one-on-one conversations. After all, he wrote or co-wrote most of them. Simply plug into songs including Counterfeit Lover, Champion Bubbler, Storm, Condemn, Number One, Never Knew Love, My Heart is Bleeding, While I Was Away and Top Ten, and you'll realise that The Originals is indeed a pleasing arc.
