Della Manley's new release, Barbican Square, her second full-length album, is the type of album that is the perfect soundtrack for a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Equal parts jazz, blues, reggae, acoustic soul and gentle funk, Manley's record is a mature and pleasing distraction from the weight of the world. Her voice is pleasant and evokes a sense of security and calm.

Like her 1998 debut Ashes on the Windowsill, Manley's poetic and introspective lyrics are brought to life by an ace team of producers including Brian Jobson, Neil Case and Ray Hitchins. The 15 songs are well written, the production is fresh and showcase her sound well. The groovy title track, Barbican Square is the clear knockout shot one would expect from an artiste of Manley's ilk.

While it is upbeat enough to cross over commercially, and the first released single I Know (featuring dub poet Mutabaruka) has a great synth sound, Manley shines more on the softer, more traditional tracks like Begin to Laugh, It's OK, and the bluesy Fragment.

Her yearning vocals on Almost Flatlining, Missing it all and Come Undone reinforce the album's restless spirit of quiet desperation. Hey Peter Pan, which boasts some soft-floating vocals, is a haunting ballad that petitions the fictitious character while Other Side Of Eden creates an eerie nostalgic mood.

Dreams, aspirations, human relationships and social commentary are all presented on Barbican Square, which should woo new fans and please long-time lovers of Manley's music. Some listeners might complain that the album is 'slow', but that is, after all, Della Manley's signature style - her songs grow on you.

Overall, if you loved Ashes on the Windowsill, chances are you will find Barbican Square a very good sophomore effort from the guitar-strumming chanteuse. Manley shows great talent and this album is worth adding to your collection, and playing as the soundtrack to your rainy weekend.
