E Dee's real roots
Basil Walters, Observer staff reporter
Saturday, July 15, 2006

Although a pretty accomplished artiste in Los Angeles, singer E dee is, like many other foreign-based acts, returning to his roots to establish his authenticity.

A graduate in management technique at Campus Hollywood, California where he studied acting, he has recently returned home via New York after filming a cameo appearance in the urban action flick, The Party. The film stars RL from the r&b group Next, and Saturday Night Live alumnus, Darryl Hammond. E Dee also contributed four songs to the soundtrack of the movie.

"I'm trying to get a Jamaican release as I'm a Jamaican," says E Dee. Born Everton Dennis in Clarendon 25 years ago, the Lennon High past student and former VP Records distributor has built a name for himself in California as a cross-over singjay.

Music has taken him to places like Japan and Hawaii, working with all the big names in reggae, such as Beres Hammond, as well as hip-hop artistes. "I've been on a lot of shows, I've been on UPN at the Appollo, I appeared on a lot of things. I've three albums and this album we're promoting right now is called JA 2 LA 2 Di World. Its the main one we're trying to break internationally," E Dee explained.

Expanding on the reason for his return home, E Dee further explained. "Its a situation where after several years, you build your fan-base and have a following. So when you do a show in LA, you got that support from people who love your music and come out to suppot you. I'm living there (in LA), but I'll be down here a lot, because yah soh is home yuh nuh, and I know its vital down here because this is the foundation of reggae."

Asked if he prefers acting to singing, he said . "The music comes natural, because its a thing weh God gimme. Acting is a thing I study and I discovered that I could act. Later on when the music hits, I'll be doing a lot of movies. So the music is a first choice for me. "

Understandable, given the success he is currently enjoying, particularly on the Japanese charts.

"I've a song, Between The Sheets, a cover of the Isley Brothers, which they are really loving over there (in Japan), R U Ready, we have the video for that one and I have a collaboration with EMI Toshiba artiste, Ms Trinity, called Bounce Around which is running on MTV right now, so I should be over there (Japan) in another couple of weeks doing some shows," he revealed.

But acting has not been put down. "I'm actually shooting a movie right now. The producer is Jerry Jackson. Its actually about me, because I used to do shows and many promoters that saw me encouraged me to write scripts because they liked my personality. Its kind a like I'm playing me, instead of a made-up character. I'm going back to LA to complete it."
